The Origin
Karuna is a Sanskrit word which signifies compassion and empathy. India’s Karuna Quilt Movement is a platform for us Indians to come together and give a beautiful shape to our sentiments of gratitude for our Corona Warriors and members of the Indian Armed Forces.
Our Mission
The very thought of a quilt brings feelings of a very snug and comfortable state. Let us come together and contribute many or at least a 12.5 inches x 12.5 inches square that will go towards making a beautiful quilt – thanking someone who is fighting for our protection to feel snug and comfortable.

Our Vision
The process of dipping into our emotions and creating something tangible can have tremendous healing powers and provide some much-needed catharsis in these challenging times. Making something with one’s own hands, something which can be touched and felt is a beautiful act of mindfulness and gratitude – truly priceless.
Our Aim
This is the time to weave together the strong fabric of all of us coming together as a nation, uniting one block/ square at a time to make several quilts that will provide comfort to the ones who are doing their best to protect all of us.
Expression and sharing are not bound by expertise or specialization ever. What comes from your heart and is made by your own hands will always bring a lot more joy and satisfaction, in turn making your creation simply beautiful. Start with your imagination and let it translate itself into the fabrics. You can paint, stitch, make a collage of fibre, knit, embroider, crochet – anything that your heart desires.
If you are a quilter or you’re good with sewing, then we request you to make some traditional and simple quilt blocks that can be assembled into single quilts right away.
There are no restrictions on the number of blocks or designs. It can be anything ranging from the traditional quilt blocks to the eclectic art design blocks.
In case you wish to make your contributions in the form of fabrics or finished quilts, then you will find that option on this website on the CONTRIBUTIONS page. The aim is to collect 1500 blocks by November 14 and then keep going to 15000 blocks and more, as there are many who are deserving of our gratitude. From 100 quilts to 1000 quilts in a year.
We are thrilled and grateful to achieve our first milestone of making a 100 quilts by Nov 14. Now the journey continues to making a 1000 quilts by Aug 15, 2021 – India’s 75th Independence Day.
The Process
Send us Your Beautiful Blocks, one that we can touch and feel.
There are two ways of sending us the blocks:
1. Eclectic Art Design Blocks
For the art blocks, they should be made with fabrics or be knitted/crocheted blocks. You can use new fabrics, recycled fabrics, clean durable old fabrics – even a mix of all of them. Use your imagination & be creative. You can design and decorate your blocks with laces, threads, paints, beads, ribbons, and all that your heart desires. Just leave a half-inch blank edge on all the 4 sides, to ensure that your designs remain intact when the squares are sewn together.
2. The Traditional Quilt Blocks
Blocks that will be made into quilts’ rights away will be the simple traditional quilt blocks.
For these traditional quilt blocks – It should be a square of 12.5 inches by 12.5 inches. We understand that there could be slight variations in size which will surely add to your human touch.

The thought behind a target of 1000 quilts in a year.
When you count the number of days from the beginning of the Janata Curfew in India to August 15, it comes to 147 days. When we add the three wings of the Indian Armed Forces, the number adds up to 150. At least 10 times the gratitude for each of the 150 days made it 1500.
This then became the Target number of blocks to be collected within 3 months from August 15 to Nov 14 – a date that coincides with Children’s day and India’s biggest festival – Diwali. I am sure that together we can reach and cross 10 times the number of 1500 getting us to 15000 blocks in one year which is August 15, 2021 – The 75th year of India’s independence.
15 blocks of 12.5″ by 12.5″ are required to make one quilt of 54″ by 84″ with the additional fabrics for the sashings, borders, and binding. 1500 blocks will make 100 quilts and 15000 blocks will make 1000 quilts. Together we Indians will cross this Target by a huge margin.

एक रजाई का ख्याल आते ही मन में एक आरामदायक और सुरक्षित स्थिति का भाव आता है। तो आइए साथ मिलकर यही आरामदायक और सुरक्षित भाव उनको भी दें जो हमारी सुरक्षा के लिए लगातार बिना रुके लड़ रहे हैं और ये हम, 12.5 इंच x 12.5 इंच का महज़ एक या अनेक चौकोर बनाकर कर सकते हैं जिससे एक सुन्दर रजाई इन योद्धाओं के लिए बनाई जाएगी।

विज़न - दीर्घकालिक दृष्टि
अपने मन की तह में जाकर जब हम अपनी भावनाओं को इस तरह आर्ट रूप में व्यक्त करते हैं तब ना सिर्फ हम एक सुन्दर आर्टपीस तैयार करते हैं बल्कि एक चिकित्साविधान का (theruepatic) अनुभव भी करते हैं और साथ ही इस चुनौतीपूर्ण समय में कुछ बहुत आवश्यक रेचन (catharsis) भी प्रदान कर सकते हैं।
अपने हाथों से कुछ बनाना, कुछ ऐसा जिसे छुआ और महसूस किया जा सकता है, यह चेतन और कृतज्ञता का एक सुंदर कार्य है – वास्तव में अनमोल।
हमारा उद्देश्य
अब वक्त आ गया है कि हम सब देशवासी एक मज़बूत कपड़े कि तरह जुड़ जाऐं, और एक एक चौकोर को जोड़ते जोड़ते अनेकों सुन्दर क्विल्ट्स बनाएं जो उन सबको आराम पहुंचाऐं जो हमारी सुरक्षा में कोई भी कसर नहीं छोड़ते।
अभिव्यक्ति और साँझाकरन कभी भी विशेषज्ञता के बाध्य नहीं होते हैं। साथ ही अपने खुद के हाथों से और सच्चे दिल के साथ बनाई गई रचनायें हमें हमेशा अधिक खुशी और संतुष्टि प्रदान करती हैं।
आप अपनी कल्पनाओं को उड़ान देते हुए उन्हें छोटे चौकोर कपड़ों पर उनका रूप दे दिजिए। इन चौकोरोन को आप अपने मन से किसी भी तरीके से बना सकते हैं। जैसे कि सिलाई, पैच वर्क, बुनाई, क्रोशिया, फ़ैब्रिक पेंट्स, फ़ाइबर आर्ट्स इत्यादि ढंग से और जो भी आपके दिल से व्यतीत हो।
यदि आप एक क्विल्टर हैं या आपको सिलाई आती है, तो हम आपसे कुछ पारंपरिक और सरल क्विल्ट ब्लॉक बनाने का अनुरोध करते हैं, जिन्हें तुरंत एक क्विल्ट के रूप में ढ़ाला जा सकता है। ब्लॉक या डिज़ाइन की संख्या पर कोई प्रतिबंध नहीं है। यह पारंपरिक क्विल्ट ब्लॉकों से लेकर रोमांचक आर्ट डिज़ाइन ब्लॉकों तक कुछ भी हो सकता है।

प्रक्रिया
हमें अपने सुंदर ब्लॉक भेजें, एक जिसे हम छू सकते हैं और महसूस कर सकते हैं।
हमें ब्लॉक भेजने के दो तरीके हैं:
१. चुनींदा आर्ट डिज़ाइन ब्लॉक
आर्ट ब्लॉकस के लिए, उन्हें किसी कपड़े से बनाया जा सकता है या फिर वह बुने हुए/क्रोशिया के ब्लॉकस भी हो सकते हैं। इन्हें बनाने के लिए आप नए कपड़े, इस्तमाल हो चुके कपड़े, साफ सुथरे पुराने कपड़े का उपयोग भी कर सकते हैं – यहां तक कि उन सभी को मिलाजुला के भी प्रयोग कर सकते हैं। अपनी कल्पना का प्रयोग करें और रचनात्मक रहें। आप अपने ब्लॉक को लेस, धागे, पेंट्स, मोतियों, रिबन और जो आपका दिल चाहे उसके साथ डिज़ाइन और सजा सकते हैं। ब्लॉक बनाते समय बस ध्यान रखिएगा की चारों तरफ आधा इंच का खाली किनारा छोड़ दें, ताकि यह सुनिश्चित किया जा सके कि सिलाई करते समय आपके डिज़ाइन बरकरार रहें।
२. पारंपरिक क्विल्ट ब्लॉक:
पारंपरिक क्विल्ट ब्लॉकस वह ब्लॉकस हैं जिन्हें प्राप्त करते ही, तुरंत एक पूरी क्विल्ट के रूप में ढ़ाला जाएगा।
इन पारंपरिक क्विल्ट ब्लॉकों के लिए आपका ब्लॉक 12.5 इंच बाइ 12.5 इंच का होना चाहिए। हम समझते हैं कि आकार में थोड़ी भिन्नता हो सकती है जो निश्चित रूप से आपके मानवीय स्पर्श का एहसास देगा। इन ब्लॉकों को बनाने के लिए आप अपने पसंदीदा पैटर्न बना सकते हैं, या कुछ पैटर्न नीचे दिए गए लिंक में भी देख सकते हैं।

एक साल में 1000 क्विल्ट्स बनाने के लक्ष्य की वजह।
अगर हम भारत में हुए जनता कर्फ्यू से लेकर 15 अगस्त तक के दिनों की गिनती करें, तो यह आँकड़ा 147 दिनों का होता है। अब हम भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों की तीनों शाखाओं को जोड़ें, तो संख्या 150 हो जाती है। अब इन 150 दिनों में से प्रत्येक एक दिन के लिए हम कम से कम अपना 10 गुना आभार व्यक्त करें तो संख्या 1500 की आती है।
यही कारण था कि 15 अगस्त से 14 नवंबर तक, यानी 3 महीने के भीतर एकत्र किए जाने वाले ब्लॉक्स की लक्ष्य संख्या 1500 बन गई – वह दिन जो बाल दिवस और भारत के सबसे बड़े त्यौहार – दिवाली के साथ मेल खाता है। मुझे यकीन है कि अगर हम भारतीय एक साथ मिल जायें तो हम एक वर्ष में 1500 का दस गुना यानी कि 15000 ब्लॉक्स बना सकते हैं, यहां तक कि इस आंकड़ें को पार भी कर सकते हैं, 15 अगस्त, 2021 तक – जो भारत की स्वतंत्रता का 75वां वर्ष है।
एक 54″ बाइ 84″ की क्विल्ट बनाने के लिए 12.5″ बाइ 12.5″ के 15 ब्लॉक्स और साथ ही सैशिंग, बॉर्डर्स और बाइंडिंग के लिए अतिरिक्त कपड़े की ज़रूरत होती है। तो इसी तरह 1500 ब्लॉक से 100 क्विल्ट्स बनाई जाएंगी और 15000 ब्लॉक से 1000 क्विल्ट्स। मुझे यकीन है कि हम सभी भारतीय मिलकर इस लक्ष्य से बहुत ज्यादा प्राप्त कर पाएंगे।
